Summary
Pol Sax: Metro line 5
A novel about Berlin
Along the Berlin metro line number 5, between Aleksanderplatz and Henov, three destinies of young people come together? Barbara, Heinrich and Paul. Barbara is noticed by sculptor Paul in a department store and her laugh reminds him of his former love Tina, who died in an accident. Barbara's casual acquaintance Heinrih, also Paul's former gifted colleague from the Academy of Fine Arts who now suffers from schizophrenia and feels best at subway stations and in parks, gets involved in the relationship started between Barbara and Paul. Heinrich's strangeness and helplessness attract Barbara, who is going through difficult times - her brother is dying of cancer in the hospital and she tries to help him financially, thus giving herself to prostitution - which none of her new friends know about. Finally, he has to decide between Paul and Heinrich, and after the death of his brother, for a completely new life.
An elegantly told, unpretentious novel of subtle destructive power.
