Bukowski Charles

Summary

Charles Bukowski: Notes of an old crook

... And there is the secret of Charles Bukowski's success. In a century in which Americans express their rebellion and resistance in all possible ways, Bukowski does it most subtly, unencumbered by any ideological ballast, anything that could put him in the position of some kind of prophet. After all, Bukowski himself said that he was always only interested in stories and women. If there is even a drop, all the better.
In Bukowski it is difficult to read Salinger's existentialism, Hemingway's protest against war and violence, nor Kerouac's romanticism of the individual, Ginsberg's "scream", Burroughs' experimentalism, Huxley's new age, not even Miller's artificial eroticism, even more difficult is Fitzgerald's moralism or Dreiser's sociologicalism. Despite this, Bukowski, surprisingly, although with a lot of "suffering", managed to become a cult figure (and more cult than the many mentioned) of the underground and the new American "lost generations", whatever you mean by that term.
Why? This is because all the "big" themes and "crucial" problems in Bukowski are summarized and expressed on a single level: the level of pure banter.
And you should know that.
(Afterword by Denis Peričić)
