Summary
Robert Menasse: Don Juan de la Mancha or the Cultivation of Lust
"In this novel, the contemporary Austrian writer Robert Menasse describes the meanderings of the mental abyss of his middle-aged protagonist, newspaper editor, seducer and melancholic Nathan, who seems to have never fully come out of his father's shadow. Dissatisfied with his sexual life and the frustrations he experiences moving from partner to partner again and again, the hero of this kind of novel about growing up, but also aging, is a representative of the generation that came of age after 1968; Robert Menasse portrays it in a fun and dynamic way, showing us a society "that cannot sell even a liter of sour water without coloring it erotically".
