Summary

Juan Gabriel Vasquez: When You Look Behind You

"He thought memories were invisible like light; and just as smoke makes light visible, there had to be a way to make memories visible." In October 2016, Colombian director Sergio Cabrera attends a retrospective of his films in Barcelona, the holding of which coincides with a turning point in his life - his father has just died, his marriage is in crisis, and his country's government has rejected peace agreements that would have allowed the war that has lasted more than fifty years to finally end. During those few days, Sergio recalls the events that marked his life, as well as his father's.
From the Civil War in Spain to the exile of his republican-oriented family to America, from the Cultural Revolution in China to the armed movements of the sixties, the reader will witness a life that is much more than a great adventure: it is an account of half a century of history that shook the whole world.
When you look back, it is a story about real events and a real, famous, living person, which is always a risky choice, since such texts often fall into banality or are not attractive enough for readers. However, Juan Gabriel Vasquez managed to overcome that trap and bring us a touching portrait of a family caught in the vortex of historical events.
The novel is an impressive study of social, political and personal life that the reader will not forget.
