Summary

Michel Houellebecq: Lanzarote and other texts

Everything begins with the accidental and harmless selection of Lanzarote as a tourist destination, only to become a symbolic meeting place of the body and eternity. Lanzarote is a longer story or millenarian short novel named after a volcanic island in the Canary Islands that represents a crossroads of destinies and enigmatic love experiences. Even when Michel Houellebecq tries to write a purely narrative novel, he fails to leave it without a metaphysical spice to motivate the reader. "This, I said to myself, is what the world will look like after it collapses," Houelebecq expresses his love for the desolate landscape of Lanzarote, which represents the beginning of the fundamental inspiration for the themes he will later develop in "The Possibilities of the Island" (not coincidentally, the film of the same name was shot on that island). literary creativity that he subjects to his characteristic and devastating criticism. It is clear from this trilogy that Houeilebecq's theoretical thoughts create the basis for the city from which his novels are later incubated, through a strange alchemy. "Literary, artistic, musical criticism, everything would essentially have to turn into a unique book that we will write for the rest of our lives; this seems to me a reasonable way of life, happy and even desirable in practice," Houellebecq describes his literary process.
