Summary

Vasko Popa: With the Wolf

Already with the publication of Upright Land, Vasko Popa slightly moved away from his recognizable lyrical fables, disciplined surrealism and defiance of socialist realism with absurd humor, making a turn in the national direction. On the basis of the cycle "Pilgrimage" grew his fifth collection - Wolf's Salt (1975) - whose main thematic preoccupations are the problems of identity and origin, that is, the poet's awareness of historical conditioning.

In these poems, the lyrical self confronts the world because it tries to understand, interpret and comprehend it starting from the original and causal, diving into the immense depths of the mythological memory of an entire nation. It is a collection that as a whole is so compact that the question of the autonomy of individual songs arises. Wolf Salt has seven cycles in a symmetrical arrangement, like a funnel in the number of songs (7-5-5-6-5-5-7), and it tells about the Lame Wolf, an old pre-Christian Serbian tribal god, whose memory lives on in stories, cults, legends and rituals.
These songs are a tribute to that ambivalent figure of good and evil, life and death, extinction and survival, that ancestral spirit of the Serbian nation. The literalization of idiomatic expressions that are used in everyday language in a metaphorical sense, the combination of semantically unconventional concepts, linguistic and stylistic diversity realized by the use of spoken language and jargon, neologisms and archaisms, as well as the dominant presentation of abstract phenomena in the form of tangible, physically present objects - these are some of the poetic strategies that the poet uses in this collection on the path between the material and the spiritual, between "wolf hunger" and "star guides", in to his search for the keys to earthly order and human destiny.
