Summary
Vasko Popa: Upright Land
Vaska Popina Upright Land is a kind of poetic pilgrimage through ten centuries of cultural memory and a gathering place of linguistic experience of the Serbian-Byzantine tradition. In five concise cycles, the poetic traveler travels with a historical step, "with his father's staff in his hand / with a burning heart on the staff", from Serbian medieval monasteries (Hilandar, Kalenić, Manasija, Žiča, Sopoćani), through Kosovo and Ćele-kula, those symbols of national ruin, to Belgrade, the new Serbian spiritual center.
