Popa Vasko

Summary

Vasko Popa: The House in the Middle of the Road

The House in the Middle of the Road, first published in 1975, contains 7 cycles ("Guardian", "The Wall", "Armed Goodness", "The Eyes of Sutjeska", "The House in the Middle of the Road", "The Wind", "Records of the House in the Middle of the Road"), which were created during the poet's 30 years of dealing with historical and political topics. Although it contains a compositionally recognizable scheme of Popa's previous collections, its coherence actually rests on the poet's subsequent careful "compilation work". For example, the cycle "Eyes of Sutjeska" - which thematizes the battle on the river of the same name in 1943, that synonymous horror of war and human suffering for the poet - primarily belonged to the first edition of the Nepočin-polje collection and only later became part of that poetic whole.

The innovativeness of Vaska Pope's patriotic lyrics is expressed in a semantically and motivically unconventional, hermetic structure that pushes the boundaries of patriotic poetry in the direction of engaging poetry. In the collection, not only individual but also national experience is humanly generalized, internationalized and cosmically universalized, and the poetic subject adopts new environments with the poetic intimacy of a citizen of the world. The political attitude of the poet is mediated by personal experience and testifies that the poet is ready to risk his life for the sake of a political attitude aimed at the transformation of the collective.

The collection of poems Kuća sred česte renounces the struggle for the autonomy of art, as well as the poetic mythology of modern poetry characterized by the depersonalization of the poetic act, announcing that the value of poetry will soon be determined more by the social context than the poetic text itself.
