Summary
Vasko Popa: Živo meso
Vasko Popa's seventh book of poetry, Živo meso, was published in 1975 and contains 37 poems, created in a short period from 1972 to 1973. The structural innovation represents the renunciation of grouping songs into cycles and turning to the principle of parallelism. We are talking about another type of cyclicity, in which pairs of songs (first and last, second and penultimate, etc.) build, through thematic and motivic analogies, as well as formal-compositional similarities, concentric circles, in the center of which is the nineteenth song - "Wolf's Eyes". This poem is also the thematic key of the entire collection and, through the motif of the Eucharist, explains the title phrase ("They secretly gave me / Raw meat to eat / In the wolf to grow a leader"), combining the mythological with the metaphysical.
Live Meat is probably Popa's most cheerful book. That cheerfulness rests on the synthesis of humor and play, "the play between life and death, myth and reality, reality and dream, fiction and reality, metaphysical play, although always directed towards life, in defense of life" (D. Antonijević).
