Summary

Josef Winkler: The Notes of Jean Genet's Tutor

"The Notes of Jean Genet's Tutor" by Josef Winkler, a respected and awarded but far less well-known German-speaking literate here, is a biographical novel written, miraculously, in honor of Jean Genet. Winkler completely exposes his timeless, multi-decade-long and apparently unequivocal, formative and strong admiration for Genet's work, heritage, and character already on the first pages of this superb prose. "Zapisi pitomc Žan Genet" is an extremely intimate, lyrically intoned and elevated biographical novel, which without much exaggeration can be viewed and evaluated as a love letter, if not to everything, at least to a good part of what Genet represented and continues to represent in the experience of the world of his admirers and other book lovers. Here, Josef Winkler follows in the footsteps of the unsurpassed Genet both spatially (geographically) and in an ideological-emotional sense, and with a head full of quotes from Genet's striking as well as more obscure editions and a handful of associative and subjectivist observations, he sets out in search of new knowledge about Genet and his personal/private history, not for a moment losing Genet's literary legacy as a faithful companion and a much-needed context in order to understand Genet realized in the greatest possible fullness both living and creativity as an inseparable work for him. We thus find Winkler in a room in a dilapidated Parisian hotel, where Genet (supposedly) spent his last days on earth, in the locations of cruel orphanages where he acquired and sculpted his extremely distinctive personality, but also in the North African elevations that provided this famous and unique pen some sort of tranquility during those great and, one would say, necessary wanderings and searches.
