Summary

Jacques Chessex: The Last Skull of the Marquis de Sade

"An old madman is crazier than a young madman, that much is known, so what can we say about the madman we are interested in, when confinement suppresses his anger until it explodes in many nasty scenes?" Who is the one who was imprisoned in a home in Charanton in 1814, a 74-year-old man who committed great crimes and does not seem to regret any of them? A fugitive, burned in his absence, a prisoner in the Bastille, a sodomite, a blasphemer, suspected of incest, and yet he is still here, full of ideas and ulcers, eager to continue the work of his path. In what way will Miss Madlena Lekler employ her 16 years, her thin, vicious body? Where are your howls and sighs coming from? What does isolation force those freethinkers in the room to do? Doesn't he at least fear death, since "every one of her actions echoes more strongly"? Namely, this maniac has three months left to live. His name is the Marquis de Sade. The figure from which Jacques Chessex draws material for his narrative is not that of De Sade from his glory days, but a thunderous sick man. However, the novelist here talks even more about the historically documented journeys of his skull through the centuries, the skull as a natural extension of De Sade's body. The Marquis de Sade dies in December 1814, and his grave at the Charanton cemetery will be opened in 1818, so his skull will end up in the hands of Dr. Ramon, the young doctor who watched over him until his death.
