Summary

Ivo Andrić: Belgrade stories

In Belgrade, one constantly feels that life is more difficult, but also more expensive than in many other cities, that one lives here with a greater role and greater risk, and that everyone - both those who lose and those who gain - have relatively more than life itself. (...) Belgrade was at least partially the immediate subject of my literary creativity. And it is quite certain that living in Belgrade for many years influenced my work not only in a formal sense but also in its essence. How much that influence is and what it is, I couldn't say - nor is it up to me to measure and determine it - but if it exists, that's for sure. It can be said that I spent most of my conscious life in Belgrade. In any case, I wrote most of my literary works there. - Ivo Andrić
