Summary
Ivo Andrić: Stories about the sea
We were not created to travel far from our doorstep, nor to live at sea. The sea attracts and enchants us, but it always turns out, sooner or later, that for us life at sea is actually a test that we are not up to either in spirit or body. That life is freer, more beautiful, and perhaps even easier than ours, but this difference is paid at a price that exceeds our capabilities. That's why, living at sea, we constantly feel like bad payers, intruders, frauds. Over time, this feeling grows and becomes more vivid and painful, until finally it drives us away from the seashore and forces us to return to our hard and meager life on land. (...) Going to sea is a bigger adventure than we think in our frivolity. At first, it seems that not much has changed. A few little things around us, but almost nothing in us. Plants from our region followed us all the way to the seashore; here, of course, they change, but the earth and stone remain the same. You just need to add the sea, a large amount of salt water, with unusual fish under a calm or turbulent surface. And that's all. - Ivo Andrić
