Summary

Agatha Christie: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

The residents of peaceful Kings Abbot are shocked: two deaths have occurred in their village in less than 24 hours. After the widow Ferrars overdoses on medication, her lover, Roger Ackroyd, is murdered - he learns too much about the secret ties that bind the villagers. Not even an hour after the murder, the body was found, and all clues indicate that the crime was committed by the stepson of the murdered man, who disappeared on the night of the murder. However, the other members of the family are convinced of his innocence and hire Hercule Poirot in the hope of offering a different explanation for this crime.

To achieve this, Poirot must understand: How did Madame Ferrars die? What was the meaning of the phone call in which the village doctor was informed that a murder had taken place? Whose secrets did Roger Ackroyd learn just before his death and where did their trail disappear? Discovering what each member of the Ackroyd house is hiding, Poirot moves towards an incredible solution to this case, which is one of the most complex in his long detective career.

Agatha Christie got the idea for this plot from her brother-in-law, and when she shaped it into a dynamic narrative with an unreliable narrator, she got one of her best detective stories. The novel was published in 1926.
