Summary

Željko Sakić: Zentropa

The novel begins at the time of the NDH, which is quite a rarity considering today's conditions in Croatia. We have the opportunity to follow how the fate of the Croatian people was reflected in the relations of world powers through the fates of fictional and real historical figures. And not only in our homeland, but also in Central Europe and beyond, like Zbigniew Brzezinski in his Great Chessboard.

In his view of the key events of the 20th and early 21st centuries, Sakić is neither one-sided nor exclusive. Sakić skilfully intertwines the fateful moves made by the key actors of world politics with the destinies of his characters, who, knowingly or not, depend on the decisions made by world powers. Although in the book the Second World War is extremely plastically described through the fates of NDH soldiers on the Eastern Front, it is in its essence deeply anti-war.

In the further development of events through the cold war that began, the fates of its heroes are again followed by unfavorable circumstances, which are a consequence of international relations. Another special feature of this book is that, in addition to the destinies of small people, Sakić also puts together a mosaic of how the leaders of individual countries or their closest collaborators act in their decision-making. Tako roman koji započinje u NDH završava praktično s “Lex Perković” slučajem u Hrvatskoj, o kome je javnost već podosta upoznata, te aneksijom Krima, čime se priča ponovno vraća u Rusiju.
