Summary
Ivo Andrić: The Cursed Court
Written in Russian Cyrillic.
In the novel about the Cursed Court, the infamous Deposito prison in Constantinople, a meeting place of "races and peoples", a place where everything that is "detained and arrested every day" (...), "for guilt or on suspicion of guilt", Andrić achieved a real miracle of storytelling in just about a hundred pages. It is difficult, even in relation to world literature, to find a similar example of such harmony of artistic construction, layering of meaning and richness of subtext in such a narrowed text space. With a minimum of verbal mass, he produced a maximum aesthetic effect.
