Ex Ponto, Nemiri, Lirika

Andrić Ivo

Summary

Ivo Andrić: Ex Ponto, Nemiri, Lyrika

Ex Ponto, Nemiri and Lyrika represent the foundation of Ivo Andrić's poetic and early prose work. These works were created in the early phase of his life, marked by the First World War, imprisonment and strong personal unrest.

  • Ex Ponto (1918)
    • Written in the style of prose poems.
    • Written during Andrić's Austro-Hungarian imprisonment (Split, Šibenik, Maribor) and exile in Ovčarev.
    • The name was inspired by Ovid's exile to the Black Sea. (Epistulae ex Ponto).
    • Main motifs: loneliness, suffering, anxiety, despair and the search for meaning through dialogue with oneself.
  • Unrest (1920)
    • Logical and stylistic continuation of the collection Ex Ponto.
    • The book is divided into three parts: Unrest from the Ages, Miri dana and Bregovi.
    • Brings a more mature philosophical reflection on human destiny, history, transience and God.
    • A gloomy atmosphere prevails, but with occasional moments of reconciliation and acceptance of life.
  • Lyrics
    • Includes Andrić's early verse poems published in magazines (such as Hrvatske mlade lirik 1914).
    • Later collected into unique units within his collected works.
    • It is characterized by melancholy, subjectivity, reflexivity and landscape motifs.
