Summary

Ivo Andrić: Paths, Faces, Landscapes

The book "Paths, Faces, Landscapes" is a collection of essays, travelogues and meditative notes that Ivo Andrić first published in 1963 as part of his Collected Works. Unlike his famous historical novels, this work brings out the intimate, lyrical and autobiographical side of the Nobel laureate. The texts were created for decades, following his early childhood, the years of darkness, but also his rich diplomatic career in European metropolises.

The work is structured in three clear thematic units that also bear the title of the book:

Paths

This part is dedicated to human movement through time, space and one's own inner self. The central motif here is Višegrad, where the author describes the hard, persistent and irregular paths of his childhood, on which he began to base his thoughts on the beauty of the world.

  • Key texts: Letter from Krakow (his first travelogue from 1914), First day in Split prison, Trial in cell number 38, One view of Sarajevo, The rapture and suffering of Tom Galus.

Faces

Andrić is here focuses on psychological portraits of people he met or those who left a deep mark on his memory. Through detailed descriptions of strangers and historical figures, the writer explores the secret of human existence, destiny and mutual relationships.

  • Key texts: In Danil Ilića Street, Teacher Ljubomir, In Chopin's Birthplace, Meeting in China

Landscapes

The last section presents fascinating travel impressions created during his diplomatic service in cities such as Madrid, Paris, Rome and Berlin. But, along with European and world landscapes, Andrić returns emotionally again and again and describes the natural and cultural landscapes of Bosnia.
