"Kuća na osami" is the last, posthumously published collection of short stories by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, published 1976. year. Andrić worked intensively on this rounded novelistic unit towards the end of his life, from 1972 to 1974.
The collection consists of eleven short stories connected by a unique introductory text.
- Structure and action: The framework of the collection consists of a house on Sarajevo's Alifakovac hill. The writer/narrator spends the summer months in that lonely house. Ghosts of the past come to his room - characters from old Sarajevo (like Turkish dignitaries, friars, ordinary people and strangers) who bring him their life stories, destinies, sufferings and secrets.
- Theme: The work functions as a kind of writer's reckoning with his own literary creativity, memories and writing process. Through conversations with apparitions, Andrić talks about the transience of life, history, Bosnia and the very nature of art.
- Characters: Each of the 11 stories focuses on a different destiny, reviving Andrić's recognizable microworld in which the historical abyss and intimate human dramas are intertwined.
