"Jelena, The Missing Woman" is one of the most beautiful and famous works of Bosnian and Yugoslav Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić. This lyrical short story, first published in 1934, represents the peak of Andrić's meditative and poetic style.
- Vision of the ideal woman: Jelena is not a real person of flesh and blood. She is the product of the main character's (narrator's) imagination, dreams and longing.
- Arrival with spring: Jelena always appears unexpectedly in the narrator's life, most often with the first days of spring and sunshine. It brings a feeling of light, peace and perfection.
- Transience and disappearance: Jelena disappears as suddenly as she appears. Her departure leaves a void, but not bitterness, because the narrator lives for the moments of her return.
- Inner monologue: The work is structured as a deeply emotional, philosophical and melancholic inner monologue about loneliness, love, art and the search for meaning.
