Summary

Ivo Andrić: Cursed courtyard

"Cursed courtyard" is one of the most famous and best-composed works of Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, published in 1954. This short novel (or longer story) is characterized by an extremely complex ring (framework) narrative structure in which the stories are arranged one within the other

  • Place of action: The infamous Constantinople prison Deposito, known as the Damned Courtyard.
  • Main theme: The isolated world of prisoners, guilt, innocence and the totalitarian structure of the Ottoman Empire.
  • Composition: The stories flow through memories, testimonies and legends

Main characters:

  • Fra Petar: Bosnian Franciscan through whose death and legacy we enter the story. He reconstructs the events from prison.
  • Ćamil-Efendija: A rich, unhappy young man from Smyrna obsessed with history. He is identified with the tragic Džem-sultan.
  • Karađoz (Latifaga): The warden of the prison, a complex character who combines the role of executioner, psychologist and grotesque actor.
  • Haim: a Jew from Smyrna who conveys Fr. Ćamil's life story to Peter story

The framework of the novel begins in Bosnia, in a snow-covered Franciscan monastery after the death of Friar Peter. While listing his possessions, young Fr. Rastislav recalls Fr. Petrov's stories about the time spent in the Constantinople prison. [1]

Inside that space (the Cursed courtyard), where people of all walks of life and sins are imprisoned, Fr Petar meets Camil. Ćamil was imprisoned because the authorities suspected that by studying the life of Dzem-sultan (the brother of Sultan Bayazit who lost the fight for the throne), he was actually planning a rebellion. Through Ćamil's fate and Karađoz's management, Andrić shows how totalitarian systems stifle the intellect, imagination and freedom of the individual. At the end, the action returns to Bosnian reality, closing the circle about the transience of life
