Omerpaša Latas is the last, posthumously published novel by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, published in 1977.
The work is not a classical historical novel with a chronological flow. It functions as a mosaic of excellently profiled portraits and psychological studies of the people who surround the title character.
- Main topic: The arrival and stay of Turkish Marshal Omer Pasha Latas in Sarajevo in the middle of the 19th century. His task was to suppress the rebellion of the local Bosnian beys against the sultan's reforms.
- Character of Omer Pasha: Andrić portrays him as a complex convert (born as Mihajlo Latas in Lika). He is a fanatical careerist, a tyrant and a foreigner who is hated by Christians and Muslims alike.
- Text structure: The novel remained in manuscript and unfinished after Andrić's death. The editors compiled it according to the author's clear sketches into a complete prose structure.
- Motives: The conflict of tradition and reform, the psychology of government, the fate of small people in the vortex of history, and Andrić's eternal theme - Bosnia as the intersection of worlds
