Ivo Andrić: Gospođica
"Gospođica" is a novel by Croatian and Serbian Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, written during World War II and published in 1945. The work forms part of his unofficial "Bosnian trilogy", along with the better-known novels On the Drina ćuprija and Travnička kronika.
- The main character: The plot follows Rajka Radaković, a girl who, after her father's business failure and death, devotes herself completely to a sick passion - hardworking and collecting money.
- Father's vow: On his deathbed, his father advises her to be thrifty. and reckless so as not to fail. Rajka understands this to the extreme and subordinates her whole life to the frantic mockery of herself and others.
- Historical framework: The story takes place in two cities - it begins in pre-war Sarajevo, and after the First World War and the collapse of Austria-Hungary, she moves to Belgrade, following the social and political changes of that era.
- Tragic ending: Rajka lives in complete solitude, deprived of love, friends and family. Her life ends in a dark house in the midst of paranoia, when she dies of a heart attack during the illusion of seeing a thief.
