Danijel Tatić: Fort Puna Christo
Two centuries of the most significant fort of the Pula fortification system
Punta Christo, the largest and strongest Pula coastal fort, is located above Cape Kristo, the most prominent point of the northern part of the Pula Bay, towards which a 1,200-meter-long breakwater extends from the opposite direction. The position of the fort, above the 450-meter-long entrance to the harbor, predetermined its role as a protection of the western sea approach and the southern entrance to the Fažana Channel, which served as a reserve anchorage for the Austro-Hungarian fleet.
The Punta Christo coastal fort was built 27 meters above sea level, on the top of the peninsula and the promontory of the same name that closes the entrance to the Pula Bay from the north. It got its name from the old church that was still located on the peninsula at the beginning of the 19th century.
